What began as a select group chosen for a live-to-air broadcast celebrating the 50th anniversary of Radio Canada International, the Ewashko Singers have developed into a flexible vocal ensemble with a core group of 24 singers. Whether singing Rachmaninoff a capella or Bach with an orchestra, they skillfully perform a broad range of music.
The Ewashko Singers have been featured in a concert at the National Archives which commemorated the forced starvation by Stalin of 7 million Ukrainians in 1933. They have been heard on Radio-Canada singing Ukrainian and Russian repertoire, and again performing traditional Christmas repertoire. Sixteen of the Singers performed to high acclaim in the 2008 Pops concert On the Air! Music of the Fabulous 40's, under the direction of Maestro Jack Everly. Last October they sang in the Pops concert A Chorus of Hits, also under Maestro Everly's direction. They have also combined their vocal talent with other Ottawa choirs in the National Art Centre Orchestra's performances of Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, Beethoven's Choral Fantasy as well as his Missa Solemnis, and Mahler's Symphony No. 8, Symphony of a Thousand. They also recently performed for the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards Gala.
Ewashko Singers have just returned from a tour in Italy. They performed in Venice, Florence, and Rome to rave reviews. On October 23rd, 2010, the Ewashko Singers will commence their new season by performing in a commemorative concert celebrating the 200th anniversary of the births of Chopin and Schumann, with guest artist soprano Maria Knapik. On December 11, 2010, they will present "Christmas With a Twist", performing music by the legendary Dave Brubeck. May 14, 2011, will be marked by "Lisztomania," a concert in celebration of the 200th birthday of Franz Liszt. The Ewashko Singers will be joined by special guest artist pianist Frédéric Lacroix in an evening of Liszt's sacred and secular music.
All the concerts will be held at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Avenue, and will commence at 7:30 p.m. Information regarding the sale of tickets will be available shortly. Further information may be obtained by calling Doretha Murphy at 613-565-3993.
